I believe that if a world I’m creating has something relatable to our world, it helps make it more realistic. People know and understand the environment they’re in or have been in, so creating parallels in your own world helps people to connect. Do the available animals, trees, and materials necessarily have to be the same? No, but finding a way to relate a new species or plant life to something we’re already familiar with helps.

Personally, I like having the plot change the character, in most cases. The plot is usually there anyway, at least in my writings, and the character(s) are forced to deal with what is going on, fundamentally changing and evolving as the plot drones on.

Personally, I like to outline my story with as much detail as possible. At a minimum, I know the beginning and the end. I then usually try to fill in the middle with as much as possible. I like having as complete a roadmap as possible. It helps keep me going in the right direction.
