Proofing Your Print Book

Review your book carefully before publishing to catch any issues that could appear in the final print.

Why This Step Matters

This is your final chance to catch mistakes.

Once your book is printed, any errors will appear exactly as they are.

From personal experience, if something slips by you, it’s not the end of the world.
We all want a perfect product when it’s printed and in your hands—especially someone else’s.

I once had an entire section repeat because it was missed during edits.

The good news is you can fix your file, re-export, and re-upload. If you’re lucky, like I was, only family members will end up with a “special copy.”

Use the Preview Tool

When uploading your book (Amazon KDP or other platform):

  • Open the Print Previewer
  • Flip through every page
  • Check:
    • margins
    • spacing
    • page breaks

This shows how your book will actually print

Check Every Page Carefully

Go through your book from beginning to end.

Look for:

  • formatting issues
  • spacing inconsistencies
  • missing or duplicated pages
  • header and page number errors

Focus on Key Sections

Pay extra attention to:

  • Chapter openings
  • Table of Contents
  • Page numbers
  • Headers (if used)
  • First and last pages

These are the most common problem areas

⚠️ 4. Common Issues to Watch For

  • ❌ Text too close to the edge
  • ❌ Misaligned margins
  • ❌ Incorrect page numbers
  • ❌ TOC not updated
  • ❌ Blank or shifted pages

Order a Proof Copy (Strongly Recommended)

Before publishing:

  • Order a physical proof copy
  • Review it in hand

Check:

  • print quality
  • margins and trim
  • readability
  • overall appearance

What to Look For in a Physical Copy

  • Is text comfortable to read?
  • Are margins consistent?
  • Does the spine look correct?
  • Does the cover align properly?

Make Corrections if Needed

If you find issues:

  • go back to your original file
  • fix the problem
  • re-export your PDF
  • upload the updated version

Repeat until everything looks right

Tip

Small issues are easy to fix now—don’t ignore them.

Final Check

  • Preview looks good ✔
