Understanding Print Formatting

What is Print Formatting?

This lesson gives you a high-level overview of print formatting.

Print formatting is the process of preparing your book so it fits correctly on a physical page. Unlike digital formats, print books must follow specific size, margin, and layout rules so everything prints cleanly and is easy to read.

When done correctly, your book will look professional and consistent from the first page to the last.

Why It Matters

Print formatting directly affects how your book looks and feels in a reader’s hands.

If your formatting is off, you may run into issues like:

  • Text being cut off near the edges
  • Pages looking cramped or uneven
  • Content disappearing into the spine

Publishing platforms like Amazon KDP also have requirements your book must meet. Getting this right early prevents rework later and ensures your book is ready for print without problems.

Core Concepts

Trim Size (Book Size)

This is the final size of your printed book (for example, 6″ x 9″). Your entire document must be set up to match this size from the start.

Margins

Margins create space between your text and the edges of the page.

  • Top and bottom margins keep your text from feeling crowded
  • Outside margins keep text away from the edge
  • Inside margin (gutter) accounts for the binding
Gutter

The gutter is extra space added to the inside margin so text doesn’t get lost in the spine when the book is bound.

The thicker your book, the more gutter space you’ll need.

Fonts & Readability

Print requires clean, readable formatting.

  • Use standard, readable font sizes (typically 10–12 pt)
  • Keep spacing consistent
  • Avoid overly decorative fonts for body text
Page Layout

Every page should follow consistent formatting rules for:

  • paragraph spacing
  • alignment
  • line spacing

Consistency is what makes a book feel polished and professional.

Most formatting issues come from small inconsistencies, not major mistakes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Margins that are too small
  • Forgetting to include a gutter
  • Inconsistent font sizes or spacing
  • Manually spacing text (instead of using proper formatting tools)
